Education Officials Face Investigation Over Cancelled China Trip

Tunis:Officials are under scrutiny following the cancellation of a planned educational trip to China involving students, parents, and teachers.

According to Thai News Agency, the investigation was prompted by allegations that civil servants received payments but failed to facilitate the trip. Disciplinary and criminal charges are being considered. The trip was intended for 62 students and parents from 11 schools, along with 8 teachers, totaling 70 participants. A government official from the Office of Educational Innovation Development, under the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), managed the arrangements and collected 39,900 baht from each person, amounting to over 2 million baht.

Dr. Thanu Kwandej, Secretary-General of OBEC, confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the facts. The inquiry focuses on the alleged acceptance of funds for a program that never took place, with potential disciplinary and criminal consequences for those involved. OBEC is expediting the investigation and may take disciplinary action if wrongdoing is confirmed. Investigating officers will handle any criminal aspects once a formal complaint is lodged.

Parents are entitled to seek reimbursement through civil proceedings, and if refunds are issued, civil claims might be adjusted. However, this does not absolve individuals from prior disciplinary or criminal responsibilities. The liability of schools involved will be examined on a case-by-case basis, particularly if any personnel received money or benefited from the scheme.

This case highlights the need for educational institutions to implement stricter oversight of international programs. Schools are advised to thoroughly vet organizers and program details to prevent similar issues.

Teacher Tu and school representatives are set to visit the Crime Suppression Division to provide evidence of their non-involvement in the scheme.
