Ekanat Clarifies Appointment of New Energy Permanent Secretary Amid Speculation

Bangkok: Energy Minister Ekanat Promphan has clarified the appointment of Chantanont Wannakhechorn as the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, asserting that the decision was made without influence from powerful political families and emphasizing the focus on both short-term and long-term projects.

According to Thai News Agency, Ekanat confirmed that the selection of Chantanont was based on his suitability and his four years of service, rather than any quota from influential political figures like Newin. While Nattapol Rangsitpol was also considered, the decision ultimately rested on Chantanont's experience and commitment to reforming working methods within the Ministry of Energy.

Ekanat explained the necessity for an experienced candidate to handle the Ministry's significant responsibilities, noting that although there are many capable directors-general, they still have years of service ahead of them and will have opportunities to contribute post-retirement. He stressed that the appointment followed proper procedures, requiring approval from Deputy Prime Minister Thongsak Thongsri and submission to the Cabinet.

When questioned about his previous inclination to have Nattapol Rangsitpol assist him, Ekanat acknowledged their successful collaboration at the Ministry of Industry, but reiterated that the appointment process allows for candidates from other ministries or equivalent civil service levels. He also dismissed any connections between Chantanont's appointment and his past association with Newin Chidchob, a powerful political figure.

Ekanat highlighted the importance of focusing on current and future objectives, acknowledging the challenges ahead and inviting those willing to join him in the endeavor. He emphasized his commitment to advancing the Ministry's projects and reform initiatives, ensuring continuity in both short-term and long-term plans.
