Ekniti Nitithanprapas Unveils Plan to Navigate Thailand Through Economic Challenges

Manila:Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Ekniti Nitithanprapas, has proposed a strategic plan to address four significant challenges facing Thailand. Speaking at the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings 2026 policy discussion, he emphasized the need for Thailand to adapt quickly to global economic shifts by capitalizing on its strengths in the AI supply chain and implementing economic reforms.

According to Thai News Agency, Ekniti described Thailand as akin to a small boat in a storm, necessitating quick adaptation to diversify risks and enhance the capabilities of its entrepreneurs. This approach aims to turn crises into opportunities for international competitiveness.

Ekniti identified four major challenges the energy price crisis affecting living costs, geopolitical tensions and trade polarization impacting supply chains, persistently high global interest rates, and the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI). Despite these issues, Thailand benefits from being part of the AI and new technology supply chain, leading to a 47% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the year's first half, which has bolstered private sector investment growth.

The strategic plan includes upgrading workforce skills, promoting ASEAN trade and energy projects, and expanding market cooperation through trade negotiations with the European Union. These measures aim to strengthen Thailand's economic resilience and competitiveness.
