Election Commission of Thailand Authorizes International Observers for Upcoming Elections

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has officially approved the presence of representatives from foreign organizations to observe the upcoming elections and referendums.

According to Thai News Agency, the Canadian Embassy in Thailand has confirmed that it will be sending representatives to monitor the referendum slated for February 8, 2026, which coincides with the general election for members of parliament. Three Canadian representatives will oversee the process in Bangkok.

Additionally, the British Embassy in Thailand plans to dispatch 15 representatives to observe electoral activities across six provinces: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Nonthaburi, Buriram, Phayao, and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) is also participating by sending observers on two critical dates: February 1, 2026, for advance voting, and February 8, 2026, for the main election and referendum day. ANFREL will deploy 25 observers across 32 provinces, including major areas such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Khon Kaen.

The ECT has directed its provincial offices to ensure the smooth facilitation of the referendum observation. This preparation is intended to accommodate representatives from foreign embassies in Thailand and the ANFREL Foundation, ensuring compliance with the legal frameworks governing such activities.
