Election Commission of Thailand Clarifies Election Process and Addresses System Failure

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has provided detailed explanations regarding the recent election, emphasizing that the ECT Report is only indicative of trends and not the official result. The ECT asserted that every vote was both transparent and verifiable, dismissing allegations of ballot stuffing and confirming the integrity of the voting process. Although acknowledging a system failure, the commission maintained that it did not affect the actual vote count, ensuring that no votes were altered.

According to Thai News Agency, the ECT held a press conference led by Mr. Saweang Boonmee, Secretary-General of the ECT, alongside deputy secretaries-general. The conference aimed to summarize the general election and referendum held on February 8th and to delineate the ECT's responsibilities in managing the elections. Mr. Saweang expressed gratitude to the media for their scrutiny and reporting on the ECT's activities, reaffirming the transparency of their operations.

Mr. Saeng highlighted the challenge of managing a voting process involving 52 million people nationwide. He emphasized the ECT's commitment to transparency, public participation, and fraud prevention, outlining the measures taken to ensure a fair election. The election system was designed with three key principles: transparency, public participation, and fraud prevention. He detailed the verifiable nature of the voting process, except during the administrative score aggregation phase.

Mr. Saeng presented a flowchart to explain how ballot irregularities would be addressed, describing the process of tallying votes at each polling station and the documentation involved. He clarified that the ECT Report system only reflects unofficial election trends, and due to the complexity of the data entry, it cannot serve as an official result.

In addressing the system failure, Mr. Saeng noted that it was limited to an error in result display, which did not impact the actual vote counts. He assured that every vote was counted in accordance with voters' intentions, and any discrepancies in vote counting by the Election Commission could be checked and corrected as per established procedures.
