Election Commission Requests Amendment in Ballot Barcode Case Witnesses

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has submitted a request to amend the names of witnesses in the ongoing case concerning the barcode on election ballots. The Constitutional Court has responded by ordering the previously cited witnesses and involved parties to submit their statements to the court within a 15-day deadline.

According to Thai News Agency, the Constitutional Court is currently reviewing a petition filed by the Ombudsman, seeking a ruling under Article 213 of the Constitution. The Ombudsman, acting as the petitioner, claimed that 21 complaints were received questioning the Election Commission's conduct during the general election for the House of Representatives on February 8, 2026. The petitioner raised concerns about the use of barcodes and QR codes on ballots, arguing that this technology could potentially trace and verify voter identities, thereby compromising the secrecy of the voting process and possibly breaching constitutional provisions.

The Election Commission, acting as the respondent, submitted an amended list of witnesses on April 24, 2026, to supplement a previous list dated April 17, 2026. The Constitutional Court, after deliberation, concluded that the witnesses identified should provide written statements. Additionally, relevant agencies or individuals were instructed to submit written opinions on the issues specified by the court. Furthermore, the court has required that copies of pertinent documents and evidence be submitted to them within 15 days of document receipt to facilitate consideration and ruling.
