Nakhon Ratchasima: Elephant bananas, living up to their name with each banana weighing nearly one kilogram, are being transformed into delicious banana chips by Mrs. Chalerm Chimkhonburi, a resident of Nong Bos Village in Khonburi District.
According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Chalerm discovered the potential of these large bananas, which have firmer flesh and higher starch content compared to regular bananas. Initially, she found the ripe elephant bananas less appealing in taste; however, their substantial size and texture made them ideal for coating and frying. Mrs. Chalerm, who had cultivated these bananas for an extended period without much attention, realized their value when she experimented with making banana chips.
The process of slicing and frying these large bananas revealed that, despite their size, they produced banana chips that were comparable in taste to those made from more traditional varieties. The firm and starchy nature of elephant bananas ensures that each piece can be easily sliced into a tray, maintaining its shape and providing a satisfying crispness.
Mrs. Chalerm’s initiative not only highlights a novel use for elephant bananas but also offers an exciting new product for banana chip enthusiasts. The success of these banana chips could open doors for further exploration and utilization of elephant bananas in the culinary world, especially given their unique size and texture.
