Bangkok: The Minister of Energy is accelerating the implementation of tiered energy saving measures. The Minister of Energy reiterated the revised plan to widen the price difference between E20 and Gasohol 95 by 3 baht per liter, aiming to encourage people to use E20 instead of 95. He urged the public to help the nation conserve electricity, suggesting people take off their suits and adjust their air conditioners, and announced the expedited implementation of phased energy saving measures.
According to Thai News Agency, Energy Minister Attapol Rerkpiboon gave an interview regarding the announcement of the gasoline price increase, stating that the government's measure is to freeze diesel prices for 15 days. For gasoline, the Oil Fund will provide partial subsidies, and retailers will assess the situation appropriately. Therefore, prices may fluctuate. The reason for the gasoline price increase on March 9, 2026, is due to the Oil Fund adjusting the subsidy for different types of gasoline. Previously, the Oil Fund subsidized E20 by 1 baht more than E10. On March 9, the fund adjusted the subsidy for E20 to be 2 baht more than E10, widening the subsidy gap according to retailer mechanisms. This means increasing the price of Gasohol 95 by 50 satang and decreasing the price of E20 by 50 satang. This will increase the retail price difference between the two types of fuel from a previous 2 baht to a 3 baht, encouraging the use of E20. He urged the public to switch to E20 to reduce consumption. The propo rtion of base oil derived from gasoline, and an increase in the use of domestically produced biofuels.
Meanwhile, the diesel fuel specification was adjusted from B5 to B7 to increase the use of biodiesel made from palm oil.
Regarding the energy conservation measures to be presented to the Cabinet meeting today, Mr. Atthapol revealed that the measures are being implemented in phases. Currently, it involves requesting cooperation in adjusting air conditioning temperatures to 26-27 degrees Celsius, avoiding wearing suits and ties unless necessary (except when receiving foreign dignitaries), conserving lighting, turning off lights during lunch breaks, increasing work-from-home arrangements, and checking engine conditions. The government has requested businesses to offer free engine check-up programs for certain items to conserve energy. Regular oil changes are also part of the campaign. Future mandatory implementation is being prepared; it just depends on when.
