Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has given the green light to the Smart City development plan, marking a significant step forward in transforming the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) into a digital hub. This approval aligns with the objectives set by the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to enhance the region’s infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents.
According to Thai News Agency, the Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee (EECPC) has sanctioned the Digital Infrastructure Development Plan for 2024-2027. The plan aims to convert the EEC region, which includes Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao provinces, into a Smart City and a hub for ASEAN digital activities. This ambitious project will leverage digital infrastructure and city data platforms to improve urban planning, safety, and government services.
The Smart City initiative targets seven key areas of development: Smart Mobility, Smart Living, Smart Environment, Smart Governance, Smart Economy, Smart People, and Smart Energy. These initiatives will introduce advanced traffic systems, enhanced safety measures, pollution management strategies, and clean energy solutions. A significant focus is placed on simplifying government services through digital identification systems, which are expected to streamline processes and reduce paperwork.
In tandem with these developments, there is a focus on building essential infrastructure to support the region’s digital hub ambitions. The Thailand Digital Valley will play a pivotal role, acting as a center for AI, Robotics, and IoT, and providing a testing ground for technology enterprises. Enhanced international internet connectivity will support global data centers and cloud service providers. A comprehensive digital government service system aims to expedite project approvals and service delivery.
Ms. Lalida Periswiwattana, Deputy Government Spokesperson, emphasized the plan’s people-centric design, which not only seeks to draw in technological investments but also to ensure that citizens enjoy improved safety, intelligence, and sustainability. The integration of technologies such as automated hazard alerts, paperless government service access, and real-time traffic updates are key components of this vision.
By 2027, the plan anticipates over 35 billion baht in digital investment, with at least 100 areas developed into smart cities. Additionally, it aims for over 80% of EEC residents to have access to all government services through digital means.
