Khon kaen: The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) has launched the "Eyeglasses for the Elderly Project under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn" in Khon Kaen, aiming to restore sight and enhance life opportunities for the elderly.
According to Thai News Agency, the project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Department of Social Development and Welfare, the Thai Red Cross Society's Children's Welfare Foundation, and Top Charoen Optical. Mr. Nikorn Somklang, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, presided over the opening ceremony where he presented eyeglasses to representatives of the elderly in Khon Kaen province. The event, held at Ubolratana Pittayakom School, was attended by various dignitaries including Mr. Kantapong Rangsisawang, Permanent Secretary of MSDHS, Ms. Ramrung Worawat, Director-General of the Department of Social Development and Welfare, and other local officials.
Mr. Nikorn emphasized that the project originated from the concerns of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for the elderly in remote areas who lack access to proper eye care. He noted that vision impacts not only health but also the ability to live, work, and maintain self-reliance. Since its inception in 2009, the initiative has benefited 79,812 elderly individuals. In 2026, the project targets 12 provinces to assist 4,800 elderly people, with Khon Kaen alone expecting to support 400 individuals. The Ubolratana Dam Self-Sufficiency Settlement in Khon Kaen has been tasked to collaborate with local networks to identify eligible elderly and visually impaired individuals, aged 45 and above, who are financially disadvantaged.
Mr. Nikorn further stated that the project has received royal approval to continue from 2025 to 2029. The initiative aims to bring Her Royal Highness's compassion into practice, enhancing the quality of life for the elderly in remote areas. The project seeks not only to provide eyeglasses but also to restore dignity and opportunities, contributing to a prosperous society for all Thais.
