False Blackout Warning Misleads Social Media Users

Bangkok: Social media platforms are currently flooded with messages falsely claiming that a nationwide power outage is scheduled for 8 PM tonight. Contrary to these alarming posts, there is no planned blackout. The message circulating is actually a call for voluntary participation in turning off lights for one hour to help conserve energy.

According to Thai News Agency, the misinformation has erroneously led people to believe that there will be a blackout across the entire country. In reality, the request is part of a global initiative known as Earth Hour. This annual event encourages individuals and businesses to switch off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about energy conservation and climate change. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Earth Hour and is set to take place on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM local time.

Earth Hour, celebrated on the last Saturday of March, is a symbolic event meant to unite people worldwide in a shared commitment to preserving the planet. The misleading messages circulating on social media have unfortunately overshadowed the true purpose of the event, which is to promote sustainable practices and energy-saving measures.
