Farmers Encouraged to Embrace Low-Carbon Rice Amid Rising Costs

Bangkok: Farmers are being advised to adapt to increasing production costs by focusing on low-carbon rice production techniques and the cultivation of a new high-yield rice variety, as highlighted by the Director-General of the Department of Rice.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anont Nonthri, Director-General of the Department of Rice, has addressed the impact of the situation in the Middle East on agricultural input prices, particularly fertilizers, which have more than doubled. Additionally, costs associated with water, electricity, and labor are expected to rise. The Department of Rice is monitoring these developments closely, with a focus on supporting rice farmers.

A major strategy promoted by the Department is the adoption of "low-carbon rice production." This approach aims to lower production costs by reducing the use of fertilizers, water, and labor, reflecting the current economic challenges and opportunities for cost-saving.

Mr. Anont emphasized that rice prices are dictated by global market dynamics, beyond the control of the department. Therefore, the focus remains on reducing production costs while enhancing product quality. The Department is working alongside the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry, and other partners to boost the value and competitiveness of Thai rice in international markets.

In a bid to support farmers further, the Department has introduced the "Khor Khor 113" rice variety. This new strain is lauded for its resistance to diseases and insects, soft texture, short growing period, and high yield. Propagation efforts are currently underway to ensure there is enough supply to meet demand.

By integrating the cultivation of "Khor Khor 113" with low-carbon rice production techniques, farmers can improve product quality while reducing costs, thereby securing stable income over the long term.
