Bangkok: Farmers' assemblies from the Northeast region and the Northeastern Farmers' Federation have gathered in front of the Ministry of Agriculture, demanding expedited action on the impacts of dam and irrigation projects. They plan to submit a letter to Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit on his official arrival on April 8th.
According to Thai News Agency, since early this morning, representatives from provinces including Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Roi Et, Udon Thani, and Si Sa Ket have convened on Ratchadamnoen Nok Road. They are protesting to urge the government to fulfill promises of compensation for those affected by development projects, particularly dam construction and irrigation systems.
The leaders of the protest are advocating for the swift appointment of a new subcommittee to address compensation issues related to these projects. Around 250 individuals have gathered, with plans for more participants from various provinces to join until the demands see progress.
This protest aligns with Minister Suriya's first official day as the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives on April 8, 2026. He, along with Deputy Ministers Mr. Watcharaphol Khaokham and Ms. Piyarat Tiyapairat, will be participating in ceremonial respects and policy meetings.
The demonstration has remained peaceful without causing traffic disruptions. Police are present to monitor and maintain order at the site of the rally.
