Farming by the sea, preserving the wisdom of our ancestors

Phatthalung residents plant rice by the sea, preserving the wisdom of their ancestors. This year, the lake is the most fertile in many years. It is expected that the yield will be higher than in previous years. It is also a place that attracts tourists to come and experience it. In the rice field area along Songkhla Lake, Phatthalung Province, Wat Pak Pra School, Village No. 8, Lam Pam Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phatthalung Province organized a rice planting activity by the sea. This activity is a continuation of the project to promote the wisdom of rice planting by the sea for tourism of the Phatthalung Provincial Administrative Organization. Mr. Pha Phomkham, Deputy Chairman of the Phatthalung Provincial Administrative Organization, officers of the Phatthalung Provincial Administrative Organization, and local people participated in the rice planting activity by planting seedlings on the soil that is submerged under the lake by the shore, which is muddy soil. The activity started sowing rice since the end of May 2024. Until today, the seedlings have grown well and are ready for transplanting. Therefore, we have joined forces to transplant rice plants and farm by the sea today, which is the first day of the rice farming season by the lake this year. Students from Wat Pak Pra School and Phatthalung School have learned real experiences of the wisdom of farming by the sea, helping to create awareness of preserving the local area and creating a balance in the ecosystem by the Songkhla Lake in farming by the sea, which is a unique locality that our ancestors have created. It also creates jobs, careers, and income for the rice farming community by the sea, as well as preserving valuable things for future generations with pride and sustainability. For the way of rice farming in the lake, the only one in Thailand, by fishermen along the Songkhla Lake, Phatthalung Province, most of their main occupation is going out to catch fish because their houses are located along the Songkhla Lake. They have invented a way to grow plants in the lake or along the shore of the lake to have a product to support their families since their ancestors invented rice farming in the lake by using the muddy land along the shore of the lake, suitable for growing rice plants, stretching along the shoreline for almost 10 kilometers to grow rice. Each year, rice farming in this way can only be done once, starting from the beginning of planting in June and harvesting at the end of September of each year. This year is the year that the lake in that area is the most fertile in many years. Therefore, the villagers have planted rice in the lake along the shoreline for about 10 kilometers. Each plot will be planted from the shoreline down to the sea for about 30 meters, which is the only place in Thailand that farms in the lake. The reason for choosing to grow rice during this time is because the water in the lake is brackish and it is the lowest tide. If it is past this time, there will be no yield because the seawater will rise up and flood the ric e plants, damaging them. To grow rice here, you must find a rice variety with strong stems and deep roots. When the rice plants grow, they must be tall and able to withstand strong winds and small waves that hit the shore. Villagers therefore prefer to use the RD55 and Rachini Hom rice varieties. Meanwhile, rice farming along the lake in the area has become a tourist attraction where every year many tourists come to take pictures of the green growing rice plants with the morning sea atmosphere as the sun rises from the water. Also, when the rice ears are ripe and yellow, it is beautiful and popular with tourists and photographers. Source: Thai News Agency
