Financial Expert Advises Caution Before Investing in Home Solar Panels

Bangkok:Amidst increasing global warming and rising electricity costs, many homeowners are considering solar power as an alternative energy source. However, Dr. Achara Yomsin, a financial expert and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Environmental Development Administration, National Institute of Development Administration, cautions against making hasty decisions based on enticing financial incentives or promotions.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Yomsin emphasizes the importance of understanding one's own energy needs before investing in solar panels. Each household's environment and electricity usage are unique, and these factors should guide the decision-making process. Reviewing past electricity bills can help determine peak usage times, which is crucial since solar panels are most effective when electricity is consumed during daylight hours. For families who primarily use electricity at night, solar panels without battery backups may not be beneficial.

Dr. Yomsin also highlights the need to consider the structural integrity of the house and its location, as the roof's orientation and shadows can impact solar efficiency. Potential long-term risks, such as relocation plans and maintenance costs, should be factored into the decision. Additionally, for those using loans, the effect of increased interest costs on financial liquidity must be assessed.

Installing solar panels can be advantageous for both environmental and financial reasons in the long term. However, Dr. Yomsin advises that external pressures should not influence the decision without a thorough evaluation of financial viability, necessity, and personal financial stability. A well-informed investment is one that comes from a comprehensive analysis of data and an understanding of individual risks.
