First meeting of new senators, eyes on Senate leader selection

Parliament, The Senate held its first meeting, inviting Pol. Lt. Gen. Yuthana Thaiphakdi to sit as temporary president, leading the oath-taking before explaining the steps for selecting the Senate leader. The first Senate meeting (first regular annual session) with an important agenda of selecting the Senate President and two Vice Presidents, Ms. Naphaphon Jaisajja, Secretary-General of the Senate, invited the most senior Senator, Pol. Lt. Gen. Yuthana Thaiphakdi, to temporarily sit on the throne as President. At one point, Pol. Lt. Gen. Yuthana asked members to be careful about uttering words that are against the law, both criminal and civil law, which could lead to a lawsuit, since the meeting was broadcast live to the outside world. Then, all 200 senators took an oath before assuming their duties according to Article 115 of the Constitution, which stated: 'I pledge to perform my duties with honesty and integrity for the benefit of the country and its people, and to uphold and comply with the Constituti on of the Kingdom of Thailand in every respect.' Before entering the agenda for selecting the position of the Senate President and the Senate Vice President, Pol. Lt. Gen. Yuthana explained that in proposing the name of the Senate President, 1 Senator can propose 1 name, which must have no less than 10 people as guarantors. And the person who is nominated must also present his vision for holding the position to the meeting. And it is specified that the method of secret voting will be used, calling the names of members in order of their identification numbers to come and vote one by one, which takes a reasonable amount of time to vote.
