Fishing Boat Capsizes Off Trat Province Coast: Crew Survives, Rescuer Collapses

Bangkok: A commercial fishing boat capsized due to giant waves 500 meters from shore. Fortunately, three crew members jumped to safety, surviving narrowly. During the rescue attempt, one diver suffered seasickness and a relapse of a medical condition, rendering him unconscious at sea.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred at 7:10 PM yesterday. A large 26.01-gross-ton commercial fishing vessel, which had just finished dry docking and was heading back to shore, capsized off the coast of Ban Khlong Makham, Hat Lek Subdistrict, Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. While the ship was entering Khlong Makham, rough seas and a large wave rapidly approached, causing the vessel to lose balance before being struck by a huge wave, capsizing and sinking immediately. Three crew members on board jumped from the ship to save their lives and floated in the deep sea. Shortly after the incident, police vehicles and boats, along with local fishing boats, rushed to the scene and rescued all three crew members, bringing them safely back to shore.

Later, a water rescue team from the Sawang Boon Rescue Association of Trat, Khlong Yai district, arrived to secure the boat and begin salvaging it. However, while rescuers were diving to tie the boat down, one of them suffered severe seasickness, complicating his pre-existing condition and causing him to collapse and lose consciousness in the water. His fellow rescuers quickly pulled him back to shore and rushed him to Khlong Yai Hospital urgently.

This morning, rescue workers planned to tow the wreckage of the fishing boat back to shore at Khlong Makham to inspect the damage and restore the vessel. However, turbulent weather with rain and strong waves hampered the towing operation. The boat was also flooded with mud from the waves, causing it to sink. As of now, only 200 meters have been towed from the accident site.
