Flash Floods Inundate Tourist Areas in Khao Lak

Khao lak: Flash floods from the Lak and Khao Ton mountain ranges inundated tourist areas in the Khao Lak area of Phang Nga Province, severely damaging the economic sector. On October 22, 2015, reporters reported that flash floods from the Khao Lak-Khao Ton mountain range inundated communities and tourist areas in Khao Lak Village No. 7, Khuk Khak Subdistrict, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province, following heavy rain throughout the previous night.

According to Thai News Agency, local resident Banwich said water levels rose rapidly within a few hours, causing widespread damage to homes, hotels, and shops in the Khao Lak economic district. This is the worst flooding in years.

While the main Phetkasem Road (Takua Pa-Khao Lak) is flooded in several sections, with deep water in several spots making it impassable for small vehicles, officers from the Khao Lak Police Station, Takua Pa District Administration, Kukkak Subdistrict Municipality officials, and local rescue units are rushing to the area to assist residents and facilitate traffic flow.

Phang Nga Province has ordered all agencies to expedite drainage of water from the area, but the situation remains difficult due to the continuous flow of water from the upper region.

The Meteorological Department warns that Tropical Storm Fengshen will continue to bring heavy rain to the Andaman coast of southern Thailand over the next several days. Residents and tourists in the area are urged to closely monitor warnings and strictly follow official advice to ensure the safety of life and property.
