Former Khlong Luang Mayor Found Guilty of Unexplained Wealth Accumulation

Pathum thani: The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has found the former mayor of Khlong Luang district guilty of accumulating unusual wealth during his tenure.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surapong Intarathaworn, Secretary-General of the NACC, announced that Mr. Prasert Kaithong was found guilty of illicit enrichment totaling 3,000,000 baht while serving as the mayor of Khlong Luang Municipality. The investigation revealed that in 2016, Mr. Kaithong purchased a plot of land in Khlong Nueng Subdistrict, Pathum Thani Province, for 3,000,000 baht. The land, measuring approximately 0.8 acres, was later jointly owned with his daughter under an agreement dated February 2, 2016. Mr. Kaithong could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the source of the funds used for the purchase.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has determined that Mr. Prasert acquired wealth illegally, with assets increasing abnormally or without legal justification as a result of his official duties. The NACC has submitted a report, investigation file, documents, and evidence to the Attorney General, who will file a petition with the court to forfeit the illegal assets to the state. The NACC will also notify the relevant authority to remove Mr. Kaithong from office for corruption, in accordance with Section 122 of the 2018 Act on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption. If the court cannot forfeit all or part of the assets, further action will be taken, allowing the court to enforce judgment against other assets of the accused within ten years, as per Section 125 of the Act.
