Former Police Chief Threatens Ex-Mayor with M16 During Heated Election in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Nakhon Si Thammarat: The local elections in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province have taken a dramatic turn as tensions escalate among candidates and their supporters. A former police chief, Pol. Col. Phirun, allegedly cut off former mayor and current deputy mayor candidate, Mr. Chawalit Charoenphong, in traffic and threatened him with an M16 rifle near the palace.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chawalit, who is running for deputy mayor of Wang, Thung Song District, filed a complaint with Kapang Police Station after the incident. Mr. Chawalit reported that he and the village headman of Village 1, Tambon Thi Wang, were dining at a restaurant when they were confronted by Pol. Col. Phirun’s subordinate and his group. To avoid conflict, they left the restaurant but were soon intercepted by Pol. Col. Phirun, who brandished an M16 rifle. In fear for their safety, Mr. Chawalit and his companions managed to escape and subsequently sought legal protection for themselves and their families.

In another election-related incident, Mr. Siridanai, also known as Provincial Administrative Organization Member Golf, allegedly assaulted a police officer at a polling station in Phawong. The altercation occurred when Mr. Siridanai directed his subordinates to take photos inside the polling booth, which violates election laws. When Pol. Sgt. Maj. Nisathi Kongthep intervened, Mr. Siridanai reportedly reacted aggressively, later signaling his subordinates to attack the officer. This resulted in injuries to Pol. L.t. Nisathit in front of witnesses.

Meanwhile, the municipal election in Songkhla Province, particularly in Hat Yai City Municipality, is witnessing high voter turnout. The Election Commission (EC) anticipates over 75% voter participation, with the election proceedings reportedly running smoothly and devoid of significant complaints or irregularities. The EC expects to announce unofficial results by 9:00 p.m. and aims to confirm the official outcomes within 30 days, barring any unforeseen issues.
