Bangkok: Suspects in the five-murder case, known as Thong, Pong, Ball, and Fluke, have been taken into custody and remanded as police have filed eight serious charges against them while opposing bail. The relatives of the three victims, a family of three, expressed their anger by cursing and condemning the suspects.
According to Thai News Agency, the Chonburi Special Operations Unit escorted the four suspects-Thongchai (or Thong), Thana (or Pong), Asadang (or Ball), and Chachanan (or Fluke)-to a police transport vehicle. Relatives of the victims shouted insults at the suspects, reflecting their outrage. Mr. Pong maintained a tense expression and avoided answering questions, while Mr. Thong apologized with tears, claiming Mr. Pong had coerced him into the crime. The suspects were subsequently detained at Pattaya Provincial Court, with no bail application filed for Pong the Brutal by his family.
Pong and his accomplices face eight serious charges, including premeditated murder, robbery while impersonating police officers, and firearm possession. The investigation, attended by Suksan Missajchan, president of the Pattaya Bar Association, highlights the gravity of the crime, which carries a potential death penalty. However, claims of mental illness by the suspects may affect the case.
Police continue to interrogate Fluke as unresolved issues persist. Pol. Col. Phaskorn Phaijit noted that further questioning of Mr. Chachanan, or Fluke, was necessary to gather more details. Meanwhile, Police General Kittirat Phanphet emphasized the need to expedite the investigation into the suspect network and examine missing person cases in the area. He also mentioned plans to coordinate with the Department of Corrections to monitor released prisoners and control the sale of items used to impersonate officials.
The Department of Corrections released a statement explaining the release of Pong and Thong from prison after serving their sentences as scheduled. Despite adhering to court rulings, the release has raised public safety concerns. Mr. Thana, or Pong, was previously imprisoned on charges of attempted murder and drug-related offenses, while Mr. Thongchai, or Thong, was convicted of methamphetamine use. The Department asserts its commitment to preventing reoffending through legal monitoring and surveillance measures.
The incident has not affected tourism confidence as the deceased Russian national was a resident in Thailand. Security measures will be enhanced to ensure public safety.
