Bangkok: Bangchak and PTT are engaging in a competitive promotional battle, offering fuel discounts of 1 baht per liter to their members. This initiative comes as a response to rising fuel prices, providing relief to consumers who are members of these programs.
According to Thai News Agency, the promotion from Bangchak is part of their 20th anniversary celebration of Bangchak Green Miles. Members can enjoy a 1 baht per liter discount on all types of fuel without a minimum purchase requirement on August 20, 2026, at participating Bangchak stations nationwide. In response, PTT Station offers a similar discount for Blue Plus members who spend 500 baht or more per receipt between August 19-20 at select branches.
Despite consumer appreciation for these discounts, the overall fuel prices rose by 85 satang per liter due to the conflict in the Middle East. Gas station dealers, impacted by lower sales volume from these promotions, expressed concerns. They suggested that rather than competing with discounts, increasing marketing allowances would be more beneficial. The rise in fuel prices has led to reduced sales per liter, affecting dealer profits despite apparent revenue growth from higher prices.
The retail fuel pricing structure in Thailand relies heavily on subsidies from the Fuel Fund and oil refineries. Without these subsidies, prices would be significantly higher. For instance, Diesel B7 is subsidized by 5.90 baht per liter, while Gasohol 95 receives a 0.39 baht subsidy. This policy has resulted in a growing deficit in the Fuel Fund, which as of August 16, 2026, stands at 75,562 million baht, split between oil and LPG accounts.
