General Adul and 4th Army Region Commander Apologize Over Islamic Boarding School Allegations

Bangkok: General Adul, alongside the Commander of the 4th Army Region, issued a public apology regarding accusations that Islamic boarding schools are breeding grounds for terrorists. This follows dissatisfaction expressed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul over the allegations. General Adul acknowledged a communication error and pledged to address the issues, aiming for peace in the three southern border provinces. He committed to fostering understanding among the local population.

According to Thai News Agency, the apology came after Prime Minister Anutin, also serving as Minister of Interior, led a security meeting in the southern border provinces. Minister of Defence Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, together with Lieutenant General Norathip Poynok, Commander of the 4th Army Region, and Police General Samran Nuanma, Deputy National Police Chief, held a press conference to discuss the situation. They noted the Prime Minister's concern over social criticism and his efforts to bring ministers from various ministries to address the issues, including allegations against Islamic boarding schools and an incident involving the 4th Army Region Commander's microphone being turned off. They assured that the Commander is dedicated to resolving these issues, though the press conference's atmosphere may have contributed to pressure and the microphone incident was open for discussion.

During the press conference, an incident was addressed where the 4th Army Region Commander muted the microphone while discussing an assassination attempt on Mr. Kamolsak Leewamoh, a Member of Parliament from Narathiwat Province. Lt. Gen. Adul remarked that this was a personal matter and should not be further debated. He emphasized that the Commander had already apologized and that forgiveness was extended as they are all fellow Thais. The Commander of the 4th Army Region plans to engage with local communities and seek media cooperation to promote mutual understanding.

Lieutenant General Norathip also apologized, acknowledging potential communication failures that might have caused unease, especially among Islamic boarding school attendees. As the director of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward, he is focused on resolving the issues and ensuring peace in the border provinces. He intends to engage with religious schools to clarify the situation and continue activities in the schools.

Concerning Mr. Kamolsak's case, Pol. Gen. Samran reported that the Prime Minister is closely monitoring the developments. Following the incident on March 20th, four suspects have been arrested, with one fugitive remaining. Authorities are working with international agencies to prevent the fugitive's escape, and a Red Notice will be issued if necessary. Investigations are ongoing to identify the employer, with evidence being gathered for further charges.
