Bangkok: General Nattapol Nakphanit officially joined the Bhumjaithai Party, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul proudly announcing his appointment as the new Minister of Defense. This strategic move comes ahead of the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Cambodia, where General Nattapol will represent Thailand as the Minister of Defense.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting between General Nattapol and Prime Minister Anutin aimed to outline the party’s plans, particularly focusing on resolving the Thai-Cambodian border dispute. Anutin emphasized his full confidence in General Nattapol’s ability to handle the defense responsibilities, highlighting his extensive military experience and past collaboration during the COVID-19 Counter-Operations Center establishment.
Anutin clarified that his recent practice has been to introduce external ministers to the public to ensure transparency. He expressed that this appointment is crucial for seamless management of the Thai-Cambodian dispute, stating that changing leadership during ongoing conflicts is not ideal. Anutin also voiced his aspirations for peaceful and prosperous relations between the two nations, emphasizing economic cooperation and mutual understanding.
General Nattapol’s appointment comes amidst speculation regarding the cancellation of MOU 43-44. Anutin assured that the matter will be studied by a committee in the House of Representatives. General Nattapol will soon attend the GBC meeting in Cambodia, now in his new capacity as Minister of Defense, to reinforce Thailand’s stance on the border issue.
Anutin shared insights into his visits to Thai-Cambodian border provinces, stressing that they were conducted in his capacity as an MP. He assured that these visits were not intended to overstep the current government’s authority. Meanwhile, General Nattapol expressed confidence in the clear policies discussed during the meeting, underscoring commitments to sovereignty, problem resolution, and public safety.
General Nattapol presented a roadmap aligning with these policies, aiming for timely implementation despite the limited tenure of the current administration. Though unable to promise specific timelines, he committed to executing the policy swiftly. After the formal proceedings, Anutin and General Nattapol shared a moment of camaraderie over coffee at Jarista, marking the beginning of a collaborative journey in defense leadership.
