General Prawit Challenges Prime Minister in Fiery No-Confidence Debate

Bangkok: “Big Pom” questioned for 10 minutes, the Prime Minister explained that what he said was not true.

According to Thai News Agency, General Prawit Wongsuwan, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, took the parliamentary floor to debate a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra. The session began with Mr. Ko Kaew Pikulthong of the Pheu Thai Party questioning General Prawit’s attendance record and suitability to debate. However, House President Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha allowed General Prawit to proceed, emphasizing his rights under parliamentary regulations.

During his debate, General Prawit criticized the Prime Minister’s economic policies, highlighting increased household debt, falling agricultural prices, and the lack of effective government measures to alleviate the cost of living. He expressed concern over the nation’s economic regression and questioned the Prime Minister’s decision-making capabilities, referencing warnings from the World Bank and IMF regarding ineffective financial strategies.

General Prawit also raised concerns about national security, particularly the MOU 44 issue, which he claimed threatened Thailand’s marine resources and left Thai fishing crews stranded abroad. Drawing on his extensive security background, he emphasized the complexity of such matters and criticized the Prime Minister for perceived inadequacies in handling them.

Moreover, General Prawit targeted the government’s push for entertainment complex laws, suggesting they could lead to policy corruption and societal harm. He further accused the Prime Minister of ethical violations, including alleged false asset declarations and inappropriate familial influence in government matters.

Concluding his debate, General Prawit insisted his statements were based on evidence, urging further investigation into the Prime Minister’s actions. Despite his criticisms, he expressed hope for the Prime Minister’s governance, emphasizing the need for wisdom and humility in leadership.

The debate garnered applause from parliament members, though the session’s chair called for restraint. Observers noted General Prawit’s apparent fatigue during his speech. Following his address, Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra briefly responded, asserting the inaccuracy of General Prawit’s claims before resuming her seat.
