Sakon nakhon: The GI (Geographical Indication) mark for Sakon Nakhon's natural indigo dyed fabric has been selected for the ceremonial attire of the Thai national team at the 2026 Asian Games.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Oramon Sapthaveetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, announced that 'Sakon Nakhon Indigo Dye' and 'Sakon Nakhon Natural Indigo Fabric,' products from Sakon Nakhon Province, will be part of the Thai national athletes' ceremonial attire at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The designs are under the SIRIVANNAVARI brand, created by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, who serves as a fashion and design ambassador for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya aims to integrate Thai textiles with modern fashion, making the ceremonial attire a representation of Thai identity. This initiative highlights the craftsmanship and wisdom behind the fabrics, bringing pride to the people of Sakon Nakhon and Thailand as a whole.
The ceremonial uniforms are designed with the theme "The Art of Unity" and incorporate "Sakon Nakhon natural indigo fabric" from Ban Don Koi in Phannanikom District, Sakon Nakhon Province. This community meets GI standards in its production and quality control processes, using cotton fabric from the Foundation for the Promotion of Arts and Crafts.
The design concept reflects the dedication of weavers and dyers, akin to athletes' rigorous training. The fabric's distinctive shades are a result of traditional indigo dyeing techniques, showcasing Sakon Nakhon's unique craftsmanship.
"Sakon Nakhon Indigo Paste" is a traditional product made from specific indigo plant leaves. The production combines local methods with Sakon Nakhon's ideal climate, creating a high-quality paste used in natural indigo-dyed fabrics.
"Sakon Nakhon Natural Indigo Fabric" is a GI-protected cotton fabric dyed with natural indigo using techniques passed down through generations. The Department of Intellectual Property highlights its unique color range, sheen, and fragrance.
These GI products are vital for developing the fashion and creative industries, providing economic opportunities for indigo farmers, producers, weavers, and entrepreneurs. This initiative supports job creation, income distribution, and the preservation of local wisdom.
Ms. Oramon emphasized that incorporating Sakon Nakhon's indigo fabric in the athletes' uniforms demonstrates leveraging intellectual property and local wisdom to expand markets and create business opportunities.
This initiative aligns with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Supajee Suthamphan, who advocates using intellectual property to enhance Thai products' competitiveness.
