GISTDA Launches Thai-Made Drought Monitoring System for Precise Drought Relief

Chonburi: GISTDA has launched its "Drought Monitoring System," utilizing Thai-made space technology for precise drought relief. The Deputy Prime Minister has expressed confidence in establishing Thailand as a new global economic hub.

According to Thai News Agency, Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, along with Ms. Piyarat Tiyapairat, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, led a delegation to GISTDA within the Space Innovation Park in Si Racha District to observe advancements in space and geospatial technology. The visit aimed to monitor the use of advanced technology in managing national crises and to launch the 'Drought Checking System,' which uses data from Earth observation satellites combined with artificial intelligence to track water risks geographically. This system is designed to predict in advance the potential damage to agricultural crops or water needs in specific areas, enabling timely responses to drought conditions in 2026.

The delegation also visited the National Satellite Assembly and Testing Center (NAIT) to review the progress of "THEOS-3," the latest Earth observation satellite. The project highlights Thailand's vision of self-reliance, with all design and development stages carried out by Thai engineers and key components manufactured domestically. The satellite assembly and testing were conducted entirely in Thailand, showcasing the country's capability on the world stage and positioning it as a significant player in the global space economy.

Professor Dr. Yotsanun emphasized GISTDA's role as a platform for startups and entrepreneurs to access data and innovation, aiming to create new economic value. He highlighted the importance of integrating GISTDA's expertise with other sectors, such as agriculture, to address economic challenges. He also stressed the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to develop Thailand's space industry and create new strengths for the country's future.

Dr. Pakorn Apaphanth, Director of GISTDA, outlined a three-year plan to transform Thailand into a data-driven nation, leveraging spatial data to enhance the country's competitiveness and sustainability in the long term.
