Government Advances ‘Phuket Model’ to Reclaim Forests and Upgrade Tourist Attractions

Phuket: The government is moving forward with the "Phuket Model" to organize state land, reclaim forests, and upgrade tourist attractions.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is addressing issues of land encroachment, tourism management, and infrastructure development. The initiative aims to expand to other key tourist provinces like Phang Nga and Krabi, enhancing tourism quality and increasing local income sustainably.

The deputy spokesperson revealed that Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, visited Sirinat National Park in Phuket Province to review its management and address land encroachment cases. He stressed the importance of protecting national parks and ensuring that legal loopholes are not exploited by offenders.

Currently, there are around 20 cases of land encroachment in the area. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is actively monitoring and prosecuting these cases. Efforts are underway to revoke illegally issued land titles, which mostly involve large plots in tourist areas. The Minister has coordinated with the Department of Land to expedite these revocations to manage the land for public benefit.

Ms. Lalida also mentioned that landscape restoration and organization within Sirinat National Park are government priorities. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is mobilizing efforts to restore the beach's beauty, improve accessibility, and regulate activities to ensure compliance with park laws.

Furthermore, the Ministry is planning a project to construct a pier and boat taxi system in Phuket. Funded by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, this initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and connect tourist attractions to Phuket Airport efficiently.

The deputy spokesperson stated that the project aligns with the Prime Minister's policy to enhance Thailand's tourism experience. The new Boat Taxi service will significantly reduce travel time from Patong to Phuket Airport, improving convenience and income distribution to coastal communities.

Simultaneously, the government, in collaboration with local organizations, plans to develop coastal areas and public spaces in Sirinat district, creating exercise areas, recreational spaces, and improving the seaside landscape while conserving natural resources sustainably.

Ms. Lalida concluded that the 'Phuket Model' will serve as a prototype for resolving state land issues, organizing tourist areas, and developing tourism infrastructure. The Prime Minister has emphasized strict law enforcement to ensure national resources benefit the people effectively.
