Government Extends Leasehold Rights to Boost 28 Regional Airports

Bangkok: The government is unlocking the potential of 28 regional airports, extending leasehold rights to up to 30 years to attract investment, increase government revenue, and stimulate the local economy.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is advancing its transportation infrastructure and regional economic development initiatives. This involves enhancing the capabilities of 28 regional airports under the Department of Airports (DOA) as part of the "Airport for Regional Development" strategy. The aim is to connect travel, tourism, and investment, thereby distributing prosperity to the regions and generating sustainable income for the country.

Ms. Lalida highlighted that Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Patarapong Pataraprasit, has been actively promoting measures to enhance revenue for these regional airports, focusing on both aeronautical and non-aeronautical sources. Efforts have been made in collaboration with domestic and international airlines to showcase the airports' potential, thus attracting new flight routes and improving travel connectivity, which in turn stimulates local economies.

The deputy spokesperson further explained that Mr. Phatarapong has prompted the Department of Airports to overcome bureaucratic hurdles that have previously delayed attracting new businesses and investments. This has led to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Airports, Ministry of Transport, and the Department of Treasury, Ministry of Finance. The MOU grants the Department of Airports the authority to manage state-owned land within regional airports more efficiently.

Key aspects of the MOU include the authorization for the Department of Airports to directly sign agreements with the private sector for projects valued at up to 500 million baht and the extension of the land use period. Airport areas can now be leased for a maximum of 10 years, while areas outside can be leased for up to 20 or 30 years, depending on the project's nature. Additionally, the Department of Airports is empowered to take legal action against contract violations.

Ms. Lalida emphasized that these improvements in managing commercial areas will reduce bureaucratic delays, foster a favorable investment climate, and open business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, thereby increasing government revenue. This initiative is expected to be a significant driver for developing regional economies and tourism.

The government is optimistic that this delegation of authority and increased management flexibility will unlock investment potential, attract new businesses, and elevate regional airports into development hubs in their respective regions.
