Government Intensifies Efforts to Control Invasive Aquatic Species

Bangkok: The government is accelerating efforts to control the black-chinned tilapia and red-clawed shrimp populations, utilizing research to help solve the problem in the long term. The government has ordered close monitoring of the black-chinned tilapia and red-clawed shrimp populations after their spread was found in several areas. Scientific data, technology, and research will be used to determine management measures to mitigate the long-term impact on the ecosystem and fisheries sector. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has instructed all agencies to implement proactive and continuous measures.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Yotsanulok Wongsawat, in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister overseeing the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, stated that the government is not complacent about the problem of the spread of invasive aquatic species and other aquatic animals that may affect the ecosystem. This includes cases such as the discovery of black-chinned tilapia in several provinces and the detection of red-clawed shrimp in Phayao Lake. He added that discussions have been held on all aspects of the problem, particularly the application of scientific knowledge, technology, and research to support management practices. The aim is to ensure effective and sustainable solutions, and to use this information to inform future measures for controlling and preventing the spread of invasive aquatic species.

Mr. Suriya Jungrungruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, stated that the Ministry has instructed the Department of Fisheries and related agencies to closely monitor the situation and conduct on-site investigations into reported sightings of invasive species. This is to collect data and assess the impact on the ecosystem before determining appropriate management measures. Regarding the black-chinned tilapia in Samut Songkhram province, the Department of Fisheries continues to implement population control measures to mitigate the impact on native aquatic life and the ecosystem. This is coupled with promoting economic utilization, such as processing into animal feed and fishmeal, as well as purchasing the fish to reduce their population in natural water sources.

Regarding the detection of red-clawed shrimp in Phayao Lake, the Phayao Provincial Fisheries Office is currently surveying their distribution and assessing the impact in order to determine appropriate management strategies, reduce risks to biodiversity, and maintain the long-term integrity of fisheries resources.

Mr. Suriya stated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has instructed all agencies to work proactively, quickly, and continuously, prioritizing the benefits of farmers. This includes integrating cooperation with local authorities, educational institutions, the private sector, and the public to effectively prevent and resolve the problem of invasive aquatic species. He also requested cooperation from the public and fishermen to refrain from releasing invasive aquatic species into natural water sources and to remove any caught invasive species from the ecosystem to reduce their spread and impact on the country's aquatic resources. Mr. Suriya emphasized that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will continuously monitor and manage the invasive aquatic species problem to protect ecosystems, fisheries resources, food security, and the sustainable interests of farmers.
