Bangkok: The government has mandated that flags at government buildings be flown at half-mast for 15 days, starting today, in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha.
According to Thai News Agency, this decision follows a Cabinet meeting, where it was resolved, in light of a statement from the Royal Household, that Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavadi, Krom Luang Rajasarinisiripatchara Mahavajrarajathida, had passed away. In remembrance of her graciousness, the Prime Minister led the Cabinet in observing a moment of silence and instructed relevant agencies to conduct the royal funeral ceremony with the utmost respect and in accordance with ancient royal traditions.
The Cabinet has outlined specific actions in response to the Princess's passing. All government offices, state enterprises, and educational institutions are to lower their flags to half-mast for the specified period. Additionally, government officials and personnel are to observe a 15-day mourning period, while the general public is encouraged to act as they deem appropriate.
The Prime Minister's spokesperson announced further directives from the Cabinet meeting, including the appointment of a Committee for the Royal Funeral Ceremony, chaired by the Prime Minister. Various committees and activities have been organized, such as the Royal Funeral Ceremony Management Committee and the Royal Crematorium Construction Committee, ensuring that all ceremonial aspects are appropriately managed. The Ministry of Culture is tasked with overseeing the ceremony's format and the construction of the royal crematorium.
The Cabinet Secretariat will arrange for ministers to attend the funeral rites, while the Ministry of Interior and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will organize merit-offering activities. The Public Relations Department is responsible for disseminating information about the royal activities and coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for English translations.
Reporters noted the somber atmosphere at Parliament following the Royal Household's announcement. Flags were lowered to half-mast in the late morning, and government officials, staff, and media members wore black to pay their respects. At Government House, the Thai national flag was ceremonially lowered to half-mast after being initially raised as usual.
