Bangkok: The "Savings Plus" government bonds were snapped up in a mere 21 seconds, prompting a new round of sales scheduled from August 3-5, 2026, with a minimum deposit requirement of just 1,000 baht.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the remarkable public interest in the "Savings Plus" bonds, underscoring the demand for secure and accessible savings options amidst global economic uncertainty. Ms. Ratchada emphasized that the rapid sell-out reflects a keen public readiness to engage in saving and investing, provided the government offers accessible financial instruments.
The strategy, as articulated by the spokesperson, aligns with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's policy to broaden economic opportunities for citizens. This initiative ensures equitable capital flow to the public, rather than it being concentrated among wealthier individuals. The Government Savings Bond Plus, leveraging the "Small Lot First" principle, is designed to prioritize small investors, inviting them to invest even with minimal amounts. The upcoming sale from August 3-5, 2026, is set to continue this approach, utilizing the Bond Connect platform to facilitate access for individual investors.
Ms. Rachada further elaborated on the government's commitment to fostering financial opportunities that extend beyond savings. This includes enhancing access to credit and capital for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Bank of Thailand identifies a critical economic issue as the challenge of directing capital to promising enterprises, especially small entrepreneurs who struggle with collateral limitations. By employing big data, the government aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of entrepreneurial potential, enabling financial institutions to recognize business capabilities beyond traditional collateral assessments. This initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, involves collaboration with the Bank of Thailand and financial entities to bolster SME access to credit and support business growth.
Concurrently, the government is intensifying efforts to eliminate avenues for illegal capital activities, such as unauthorized gambling and online betting, which distort legitimate market competition. Addressing these issues aims to protect public interests and bolster trust in legal businesses. Additionally, the government is focused on attracting quality investments in burgeoning industries like electric vehicles, data centers, and clean energy. Such investments promise technology transfer, skill development, and the creation of better-paying jobs. "Prime Minister Anutin's administration is diligently working to open safe savings channels, support SME capital access, attract quality investment, and combat illegal financial activities," Ms. Rachada stated, emphasizing the overarching goal to channel money into the real economy and create equitable economic opportunities for all citizens.
