Bangkok: Mr. Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, has outlined crucial measures to prevent lightning strikes during summer storms, especially when outdoors, at home, or in vehicles.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Karom emphasized the importance of avoiding large trees, electric poles, and billboards, and advised against outdoor activities during thunderstorms. He stressed the dangers of wearing conductive jewelry and the use of communication devices and electrical appliances during such weather. Additionally, he advised against parking under large trees or billboards and warned against exiting vehicles during thunderstorms.
Mr. Karom highlighted that the period from May to July marks Thailand’s rainy season, characterized by unstable weather, summer storms, and strong winds, which increase the risk of lightning strikes. To mitigate this risk, he recommended staying away from tall structures and metal objects when outdoors. Activities like farming and outdoor sports should be avoided as they heighten the danger of lightning strikes.
For those indoors, Mr. Karom advised against staying on roofs, building corners, or balconies during storms. He also cautioned against using communication and electronic devices, as the electric current could damage appliances. While in a car, it is crucial not to park under large trees or near high-voltage poles, and to remain inside the vehicle since its structure does not conduct electricity, thereby offering protection against lightning.
In situations where shelter is unavailable, Mr. Karom suggested squatting with arms close to knees, head bowed, feet together, and standing on tiptoes to minimize contact with the ground, reducing the risk from ground currents.
Mr. Karom also informed the public about resources such as the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation’s Facebook page and safety hotlines for updates and assistance during such incidents.
