Gunman Kills Five in Bangkok Market Shooting

Bangkok: A gunman opened fire and killed five people in a fresh food market in Bangkok on Monday, Thai authorities said. The victims include four security guards and a market vendor. The gunman took his own life after the shooting.

According to Deutsche Welle, the motive for the shooting is currently unclear. Thai police are actively investigating the identity of the gunman and the reason behind the incident. Bang Sue deputy police chief Worapat Sukthai described the event as “a mass shooting” and stated that the police are looking into any possible connections to the recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which concluded in a ceasefire later on Monday.

Gun violence, although not frequent, has occurred in Thailand despite the country’s strict gun restrictions. Gun ownership, however, is not uncommon. In 2023, a 14-year-old used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others in a luxury mall in Bangkok. Just a year prior, one of the country’s most tragic mass killings occurred in 2022 when a former police sergeant killed 36 people after losing his job.
