Hat Yai Mobilizes to Remove Garbage and Waste After Water Recedes

Bangkok: Hat Yai mobilized to remove waste and garbage after the floodwaters receded. The Prime Minister emphasized that the process must be completed within one week, but the obstacle encountered was the large amount of waste remaining.

According to Thai News Agency, this morning, officials in Hat Yai Municipality rushed to remove garbage and waste from several areas, some of which were piled up into mountains. However, there’s still a significant amount of trash on the streets and alleys, particularly in the economic zone, such as Niphat Uthit Road 1-3. The surrounding area is also littered with piles of trash from the flooding. Residents have been moving it out onto the roads in front of their houses for the second and third consecutive days, even though it’s been more than a week.

Officials from the Department of Provincial Administration and the Volunteer Defense Corps from Chaiyaphum Province and 76 other provinces arrived early this morning to help clear out trash and move large items from homes that were unable to be moved. These items were dumped in front of houses, awaiting disposal by excavators and large trucks. This mission was part of a planned and unplanned operation, in response to public requests. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul urged the government to expedite the “recovery phase,” which involves repairing public utilities, managing food supplies, removing trash, and returning homes to residents. He requested that trash be disposed of within one week.

At Hat Yai Junction Railway Station today, some residents have begun reserving tickets after floodwaters reached over two meters deep in the station and on the platforms. Over 70% of the train has returned to normal. Tomorrow, December 8th, at 5:50 a.m., the first train will arrive: Express Train No. 171, Bangkok-Sungai Kolok. However, it will only terminate at Hat Yai Junction Railway Station, as the lower section of the line remains damaged by flooding and is undergoing repairs.
