Bangkok: A recent post on social media has sparked health concerns regarding the use of newspaper as food wrapping after a user shared an image of fried rice, containing squid, wrapped in newspaper. This image, posted in a consumer group, has ignited discussions about the safety of this traditional packaging method.
According to Thai News Agency, the practice of using newspaper or magazine paper for wrapping food was common among previous generations, who might view it as normal. However, awareness about potential health risks has grown over time. The social media user expressed concern over the packaging method, highlighting the potential health implications with a caption, "Fried rice for 60 baht, but look at the packaging!" alongside questioning how such practices are still prevalent.
The Food and Water Sanitation Division of the Department of Health addressed these concerns, stating that while the fried rice may be tasty, the packaging method poses risks. They explained that even with a plastic layer between the rice and the newspaper, complete safety is not guaranteed. Chemicals from the newspaper can cause respiratory irritation, and exposure to heavy metals like lead can accumulate in the body, posing chronic health risks. The presence of heat exacerbates the leaching of these chemicals. They stressed the importance of using food-grade packaging and advised both consumers and businesses to avoid unsuitable paper wrappings and adhere to strict food hygiene standards. The overarching message is the importance of prioritizing safety alongside taste.
