Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued for Southern Thailand Regions

Bangkok:Heavy to very heavy rain is anticipated in southern Thailand from October 26-28, raising concerns about flash floods and landslides in the region. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for continuous rainfall, particularly affecting areas on slopes, near waterways, and low-lying regions.

According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department has released Announcement No. 6 (278/2569), highlighting the risks associated with the upcoming weather conditions. The alert, effective until October 28, 2026, points out that the southern region will face persistent rain, with heavy downpours in many locations and very heavy rain in certain areas.

On October 26th, provinces such as Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Trang, and Satun are at high risk. As the rainfall continues into October 27th and 28th, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, and Phuket are expected to experience heavy rain. In some areas, particularly along the Andaman coast and mountain ranges, rainfall may increase to 100-150 millimeters, reaching up to 200 millimeters.

The Meteorological Department advises the public to remain vigilant as continuous rainfall could heighten the risk of natural disasters. Monitoring accumulated rainfall and water levels is crucial to assessing risks and adjusting warning measures accordingly. Additionally, sea conditions in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will be rough, with wave heights exceeding 2 meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

Northern Thailand is also expected to encounter volatile weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain from October 26-27, due to a cold air mass from China. The public is advised to avoid open areas, large trees, and unstable structures during this period.

Despite the spread of cold air masses over upper Thailand, temperatures have not yet decreased enough to declare the start of winter. However, a further drop in temperatures is anticipated around November 5-6, which is being closely monitored by the Meteorological Department.
