High Fuel Prices Drive Surge in Bus Passengers at Mochit Terminal

Bangkok: High fuel prices are driving an increase in passenger numbers at the Mochit Bus Terminal, where peak demand is anticipated to reach 180,000 travelers tomorrow as people return home for the Songkran festival.

According to Thai News Agency, the Bus Terminal Authority (BTA) attributes the rise in passengers to escalating fuel costs, which are prompting more travelers to opt for buses over private vehicles. The bustling atmosphere at Mochit 2 Bus Terminal is marked by people buying tickets and waiting for buses, particularly on long-distance routes. Among the travelers are Laotian citizens working in Bangkok, who are taking the opportunity to visit their families in Muang Mon, Champasak Province, Laos. Their journey involves a bus ride to the Chong Mek border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani, followed by another bus trip. The bus departs from Mochit at 9:00 PM tonight and is expected to reach Muang Mon around 5:00 PM the next day.

The Transport Company Limited (BKS) is projecting a 5-10% increase in bus passengers compared to last year, largely due to the higher fuel prices. They expect the number of bus passengers to peak at 180,000 tomorrow, a significant rise from the usual 120,000. To accommodate the increased demand, over 8,000 buses, including those from partner companies, have been prepared for the Songkran festival period from April 9-12, 2026. Safety measures are being strictly enforced, and current fare prices are being maintained to ensure no passengers are left stranded.

For the return journey, the BTA has coordinated with provincial transport authorities to ensure a sufficient supply of buses. Taxi and motorcycle taxi services have been organized at all three bus terminals to avoid passenger delays. Enhanced safety measures include checking vehicle conditions and driver readiness before service. In collaboration with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), the BTA has increased checkpoints to screen bus drivers for drug use, ensuring safe travel during the Songkran festival.

In addition, the Department of Land Transport is running a campaign to prevent and reduce road accidents. The Passenger Protection and Complaint Center 1548 (temporary) will be operational during the Songkran Festival 2026, providing a platform for complaints and ensuring passenger safety during the festival.
