High-Speed Train Collision in Spain Claims 21 Lives

Adamuz: A high-speed train accident in Spain has resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives and left hundreds injured. The incident occurred near the town of Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, located approximately 360 kilometers south of Madrid. A train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed at 6:40 PM local time on Sunday and collided with an oncoming train, leading to a catastrophic collision. According to Thai News Agency, the derailed train, operated by the Iryo company, was carrying over 300 passengers, while the other train, operated by the Alvia company, had about 100 passengers. At least 21 individuals, including the driver of the derailed train, lost their lives in this tragic incident. Approximately 100 people sustained injuries, with 25 reported to be in serious condition. The situation remains critical as some passengers are still trapped in the wreckage, and rescue efforts are hampered due to the challenging terrain, with one of the trains having fallen down a 4-meter high embankment. Transport Minister Oscar Puente expressed uncertainty regarding the cause of the derailment, noting that it is unusual for such an incident to occur on a recently upgraded straight section of track. The train involved is relatively new, being less than four years old. In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has canceled all his engagements to address the situation. Authorities are conducting an urgent investigation to determine the cause of this tragic event, with findings expected to be released in about a month.
