Bangkok: High tides have breached two sections of the Phra Khanong canal flood barrier, flooding communities and old roads. Officials are urgently placing sandbags to repair the breaches and warn residents to move belongings to higher ground as high tides are expected to persist.
According to Thai News Agency, the high tides in the Khlong Toei area have caused the flood barrier along Khlong Phra Khanong to collapse in two places, overwhelming the defenses. This resulted in water rapidly flooding homes and roads. Inspection revealed the damaged barrier at two locations: Point 1, in the Koh Klang community, where the temporary water catchment wall was damaged and opened, allowing water from Khlong Phra Khanong to flood residential areas.
Point 2, at the sand quarry area near the community along the Phra Khanong canal, was caused by the sandbag barrier collapsing and creating a large hole, allowing water to flow through the barrier into the inner area.
Initial impacts include damage to four houses and a community health center in areas where floodwaters inundated the lower levels. Khlong Toei District Office officials are urgently repairing leaks and reinforcing the area with sandbags. While this has partially controlled the flooding, 24-hour monitoring is still necessary due to continued high tides. Residents are advised to move belongings to higher ground and closely monitor official announcements.
