Highway Police Officer Reassigned After Arrest of Paramilitary Ranger for Firearm Possession

Bangkok: The Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau has ordered the reassignment of highway patrol officers to support duties at the Central Investigation Bureau following their involvement in the arrest of a volunteer paramilitary soldier found carrying a firearm and ammunition. The soldier was returning from a mission in the southern border region at the time of the arrest.

According to Thai News Agency, Police Lieutenant General Nattasak Chaowanasai, Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, signed an order to second certain police officers to new duties. This directive comes in response to social media reports about the arrest of a volunteer ranger by officers from Highway Police Station 2, Division 7, Highway Police Command. The incident occurred on July 10th at approximately 9:30 PM, during which the ranger was detained for possessing firearms and ammunition without permission or a reasonable cause. The arrest has drawn public criticism regarding the conduct of the Highway Police, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Highway Police Command to ascertain the facts.

To facilitate a comprehensive and impartial investigation for all parties, an order has been issued to assign Police Lieutenant Colonel Wichai Mokharat, Inspector of Highway Police Station 2, Division 7, Highway Police Command, to assist in operations at the Central Investigation Bureau's Operations Center. This move temporarily detaches him from his original unit to ensure a fair examination of the case.
