Pattani: In a heartbreaking incident that has left the community in shock, four hijab-wearing assailants on motorcycles opened fire on a police vehicle, leading to the tragic death of the police sergeant's wife and injuring their 40-day-old infant. The police sergeant, who was also injured, is now safe but remains deeply distraught over the loss. He has vowed to move forward for the sake of his child and to be the best father he can be.
According to Thai News Agency, the attack unfolded in Pattani Province when Police Sergeant Adul Hanisulong was ambushed by the attackers while driving to pick up his child from school. His wife, Ms. Patima, was in the back seat with their baby, while another child sat in the front. The assailants, disguised as Muslim women with hijabs covering their faces, unleashed a barrage of gunfire using AK-47 rifles and handguns as the vehicle passed by. Despite being shot in the leg, Sergeant Adul managed to drive into the school grounds and call for help. Tragically, both his wife and baby were killed in the attack, and the harrowing scene unfolded in front of schoolchildren and residents.
Last night, an Islamic religious ceremony was held at Ms. Fatimah's family home, where many gathered to offer their condolences. Following the ceremony, her body was laid to rest at the Bue Nae Kuebong cemetery in Moo 3, Prachan Subdistrict. Meanwhile, Sergeant Adul is receiving treatment for his injuries, and his infant daughter, Affrina, is under medical supervision at Pattani Hospital after suffering a bullet graze wound. Both are reported to be in stable condition.
Sergeant Adul shared that his wife usually handled the school run but was on sick leave, prompting him to take over. He suspects the attackers had been monitoring his movements and knew of his police affiliation despite using his wife's car. He expressed his determination to overcome his grief and continue living for his child, pledging to fight for his family.
At Prasarn Wittaya Foundation School, where Ms. Fatimah was a teacher, classes resumed under heightened security. Teachers, students, and religious leaders planned a Hajat prayer for the deceased, and students prepared signs condemning the violence and calling for peace.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Santhas Chueaputtan, Commander of the Pattani Provincial Police, has ordered an urgent investigation into the incident. The investigative team is gathering intelligence and conducting DNA analysis to trace the perpetrators. Authorities suspect the attack was carried out by insurgents targeting government officials in the southern border provinces.
