Hill 350 Ablaze Amid Thai-Cambodian Border Conflict

Bangkok: The Joint Press Center on the Thai-Cambodian Situation has reported that Hill 350 is currently ablaze as Cambodia launches a fierce attack, with Thailand affirming its defense in accordance with international law. Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, indicated that Cambodia continues to engage in clashes along the border, with intensive shelling supporting attacks into Thai territory, particularly in the Chong An Ma area. Thai forces have successfully repelled and defended against the aggression.

According to Thai News Agency, Cambodia attacked Hill 350 near Ta Kwai Temple in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, resulting in the deaths of two Thai soldiers. However, Thailand maintained its position in the area, and significant military operations impacted the overall situation. In the areas of Ban Nong Ya Kaeo and Ban Nong Chan, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province, intermittent clashes continue, with the Cambodian side firing heavy weapons. The Thai side has been able to hold its ground and push back the opposing side.

Regarding the situation in Trat Province, although the curfew was lifted after the situation began to ease, the Cambodian side continued to fire continuously along the border last night, resulting in ongoing impacts on the area. The Royal Thai Navy has effectively responded to the aggression. Colonel Richa Suksuwanon, Deputy Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army, explained the difficulties in establishing security in the Ta Kwai Temple area due to the high terrain of Hill 350, which was previously fortified by the Cambodian side. Fighting in the area is still intense and ongoing.

The 2nd Army Region is currently investigating the retrieval of bodies from the area, as the fighting has not yet ended. They confirm that there are no reports of Thai soldiers being captured. Colonel Richa emphasized that the Thai operation was in self-defense against the attacks, not an offensive move. He stated that if the situation escalates due to continued Cambodian attacks, Thailand will need to defend its sovereignty and the safety of its soldiers and civilians. He also mentioned that seized weapons and equipment will be utilized according to appropriate procedures.

Mr. Patarapong Saengkrai, a lecturer at Thammasat University, explained the legal framework for the use of force in self-defense, stating that Thailand exercised its right to self-defense at the national level in accordance with international law. This was based on four key principles: necessity, elimination of other options, proportionality, and notification to the United Nations Security Council. He emphasized that Thailand’s actions strictly adhered to humanitarian principles and the protection of civilians.
