House Leaders Conclude Initial Talks on Committee Quota Allocation

Bangkok: The meeting concluded with an agreement on the allocation of committee quotas. Further discussions will be held on April 22nd. House Speaker Sophon Saram revealed the results of a meeting with party leaders and representatives to consider the allocation of positions for chairpersons and committee members in the 27th Standing Committees of the House of Representatives. He stated that while no conclusion was reached, the allocation was considered balanced: Bhumjaithai Party 14 members, Prachachon Party 9 members, Kla Tham Party 4 members, Democrat Party 2 members, and Thai Ruam Palang Party 1 member. However, he could not yet provide details on which party would oversee which committee. He also mentioned that further joint meetings with political parties would continue, as some committees still have multiple political parties vying for the chairmanship.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanayot Timsuwan, a Member of Parliament from the Bhumjaithai Party, revealed that the discussions went smoothly. He anticipates another meeting with representatives from the political parties that received quotas for the committee chairmanships on Wednesday, April 22nd, in order to reach a conclusion.

Meanwhile, Ms. Monporn Charoensri, a Member of Parliament from the Pheu Thai Party, stated that the allocation of committee positions is based on the proportion of political parties, not directly on the number of Members of Parliament. However, some committees, such as those on law and economics, have garnered interest and shared desires from multiple political parties, thus requiring further discussions after the main meeting.

The meeting agreed that each political party should consider their proposals within their respective parties and submit their findings for a consensus to be reached. Another meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:00 PM, and it is expected that the allocation of the chairman and committee positions can be finalized on the same day, as each party has already established clear criteria for consideration through their internal meetings.
