Huai Nam Khao Royal Project Empowers Hmong Community with Organic Farming Success

Bangkok: The Huai Nam Khao Royal Project has successfully harnessed technology to assist the Hmong people in Phetchabun Province in transitioning to organic farming, resulting in an impressive income generation of 35 million baht in a single year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to establish sustainable income sources and market stability for the Hmong ethnic group while preparing them for natural disasters.

According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters recently organized a media visit to the Huai Nam Khao Royal Project to showcase the organic farming developments for the Hmong community. Air Commodore Jongjet Watcharanan, Deputy Director of the Public Relations Office, Department of Civil Affairs, led this visit. Mr. Ananat Thikwan, an Extension and Development Officer, shared insights into the project's progress, highlighting that it spans 128 square kilometers, encompassing 12 villages with around 20,000 Hmong residents who primarily engage in agriculture.

The project's mission focuses on promoting organic and sustainable agricultural practices among the local population. It addresses challenges such as water management, chemical usage, and land issues, given the area's historical political sensitivities. By collaborating with local agencies, the project implements a model of 'Understanding, Accessing, and Developing' and 'Sustainable Development from Mountains to Communities'. This involves creating learning networks and expanding the project across multiple provinces, transforming traditional farming practices into high-value export agriculture.

The project has introduced technologies like drones for land surveys and agricultural standards for production oversight. These efforts ensure a stable market for agricultural products year-round, with opportunities for export to countries like Singapore. This transformation has improved the livelihoods of farmers, reflecting gratitude for the royal support that has enhanced the lives of ethnic minorities.

The project also addresses community access to information on natural disasters and climate change, enabling better preparedness. Efforts include surveying water resources and constructing water storage facilities in anticipation of potential droughts due to the El Ni±o phenomenon. The project has seen a steady increase in farmer participation, now involving approximately 500 farmers, further underscoring its success in fostering a sustainable agricultural community.
