IAEA and EGAT Collaborate to Enhance SMR Awareness and Energy Security in Thailand

Bangkok:The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) are advancing efforts to promote awareness and understanding of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to bolster energy security in Thailand. A decision on suitable locations for these projects is anticipated next year.

According to Thai News Agency, the initiative is part of a technical cooperation project aimed at enhancing the knowledge and capabilities of personnel in Thailand in preparation for SMR power plants. The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Sompop Pattanariyangkul, emphasized the importance of this technology for Thailand's national strategy to improve energy security, support economic growth, and transition to a low-carbon society.

Mr. Siriwat Jedsri, EGAT's Deputy Governor for Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy, highlighted the significance of creating knowledge and developing skills essential for adopting SMR technology. The ongoing workshop offers a valuable opportunity to learn from international experiences and enhance decision-making capabilities.

Thailand's draft National Power Development Plan (PDP2026) targets a total SMR generating capacity of 9,000 megawatts, with plans to commission the first SMR power plant by 2037. EGAT is conducting pre-feasibility studies and consulting with foreign experts to select suitable locations for the power plants, adhering to IAEA recommendations for safety and infrastructure readiness.

The planned SMR projects, with a capacity of 300 megawatts each, require an investment of 60-70 billion baht but promise competitive electricity costs due to stable fuel prices and a long operational lifespan of 60-70 years. EGAT is committed to selecting proven technologies and ensuring safe electricity generation while engaging with the public and government agencies to build support for the SMR initiative.
