Images Released of “Lao Ta” Returning Home After Prison Release: Relatives Perform Traditional Welcome Ceremony

Chiang mai: "Lao Ta Saenli," a former major drug trafficker, has returned to his home in Chiang Mai after being released from prison. His family held a private welcome party where they tied auspicious wristbands around his wrists, a traditional gesture of goodwill and welcome. Meanwhile, authorities have set up routine checkpoints in the area.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Lao Ta Saenli was apprehended by the Narcotics Suppression Police back on October 11, 2016, with a significant quantity of crystal methamphetamine-20 kilograms to be precise. Initially sentenced to life imprisonment, Mr. Lao Ta benefitted from six royal pardons, leading to his release from Bang Kwang Prison on August 14, 2016. Upon his return to Huai San in the Tha Ton Subdistrict of Mae Ai District, his family embraced him with a traditional Lisu wrist-tying ceremony, followed by a shared meal. The family requested privacy during the ceremony, asking media and outsiders to refrain from entering the area, granting Mr. Lao Ta the opportunity to rest and reconnect with his family.

In response to his release and return, security measures have been heightened in the village. Police, administrative officials, and soldiers have established checkpoints to inspect for weapons, ensuring the safety and security of the community as part of their standard procedures.
