IMF Highlights Thailand’s Economic Strengths Amid Growth Concerns

Bangkok:Thailand is being recognized for its economic strengths, including stable foreign exchange reserves and a robust production base, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advises the country to focus on job creation and boosting public income.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, emphasized that despite the IMF's projection of a modest economic growth rate of 2.1% for 2026, Thailand possesses significant financial stability, high international reserves, and a strong industrial base that attracts foreign investment.

The IMF's External Sector Report 2026 indicates that Thailand's international reserves are expected to reach approximately US$282 billion in 2025, up from US$237 billion in 2024. These reserves are more than adequate to cover short-term foreign debt and support imports for around ten months, reflecting Thailand's resilience against global economic volatility.

The World Investment Report 2026 from the United Nations Agency for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) shows a 30% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) into Thailand, totaling US$19,098 million in 2025. This growth underscores Thailand's appeal as an investment destination due to its developed industrial infrastructure.

Ms. Lalida highlighted the automotive industry and its supporting network as key components of Thailand's industrial strength, providing a foundation for future industries such as electric vehicles and high-tech sectors. The government aims to transform these potentials into real economic benefits like job creation and increased public income.

Though Thailand's projected growth rate is the lowest among the ASEAN-5 countries, the government is committed to accelerating economic growth by promoting value-added investment and supporting Thai entrepreneurs, particularly SMEs. The focus is on skill development and reducing business obstacles to ensure widespread public benefit from investments.

Ms. Lalida stressed the importance of leveraging Thailand's economic resources and existing strengths to improve the quality of life for its citizens, beyond just maintaining international reserves and attracting investments.
