Chonburi: Three Indian tourists were recently rescued after being scammed into traveling to Thailand, where they were held captive and ransomed by a transnational criminal gang. This incident underscores the need for travelers to exercise caution when dealing with unusually cheap tour packages.
According to Thai News Agency, the rescue operation was conducted by immigration officers in Chonburi province, in collaboration with Pattaya City Police Station. The tourists were deceived by individuals posing as tour operators offering low-cost packages. Upon arrival in Thailand, the victims were separated from their group, held captive, and ransom was demanded from their families abroad. The perpetrators also assaulted the victims and used threatening photos and videos to coerce payment. All five suspects involved in the crime have been apprehended, and further investigations are ongoing.
Pol. Col. Prinya Klinakesorn, Deputy Commander and spokesperson for Immigration Division 3, emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of travel service providers. He warned tourists against accepting unusually cheap travel offers and assured that Thailand remains a safe destination for visitors from all nationalities.
Immigration authorities in Thailand employ stringent screening processes for individuals entering and exiting the country, utilizing international and national security databases. Only those without a criminal record or legal barriers are granted entry. Despite the small percentage of tourists engaging in illegal activities, measures are in place to aid victims and ensure justice.
The Royal Thai Police have mandated increased vigilance in inspections, screenings, and enforcement of laws against foreign nationals who pose security threats.
