Interior Ministry Launches Corruption Probe into Local Government Exam Scandal

Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry has initiated the formation of a committee to investigate corruption within local government, promising results within seven days and emphasizing an individualized examination of those involved rather than a broad approach.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Arsit Sampanrat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, spoke at Government House following a meeting with the Prime Minister and anti-corruption agencies. He stated that the local government exam cheating scandal has significantly undermined public trust. The Prime Minister has instructed decisive measures to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. The Ministry's legal department has already filed a complaint with the police to initiate an investigation into additional parties involved in the scheme, with a commitment to prosecute anyone implicated.

The Ministry of Interior has swiftly established a fact-finding committee led by Mr. Santithorn Yimlamai, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. The committee is operating under a strict "7-day critical period" to complete the investigation and report the findings directly to the Prime Minister.

In response to inquiries about potential cancellation of all exam results, Mr. Arsit assured that there would be no blanket cancellations. Instead, a thorough screening process will be conducted. Among the over 300,000 test takers nationwide, those who passed based on merit will have their results upheld. Conversely, individuals found guilty of fraud, such as altering questions or switching answer sheets, will have their results voided and face legal action. Addressing concerns over potential legal challenges, Mr. Arsit urged calm and assured that the Ministry has a dedicated committee to ensure fairness throughout the process.

The Permanent Secretary also highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions involved. The Department of Local Administration had contracted external universities for exam preparation and grading. Consequently, coordination is underway to gather evidence from these universities, and representatives from the institutions will be held accountable for any discrepancies. Regarding an online audio clip linked to a former deputy minister, Mr. Arsit stated that the police would conduct a thorough investigation.

Concerning disciplinary actions, Mr. Arsit disclosed the urgent formation of a committee to investigate serious misconduct by a director in Wichian Buri District, Phetchabun Province, who has been implicated in the corruption case. An immediate suspension order will be issued to the individual to ensure a transparent investigation.
